Tonight, I “Googled” something I never thought I’d be searching for in a million years on the net–“low cal fruits and vegetables.”  Yes, it’s just not enough to be eating fruits and veggies.  If you eat too many calories, you gain weight.  Geez.

As mentioned yesterday, I have been eating super healthy—yet not noticing anything positive around the girth.  What I’m really trying to figure out is if I eat nine servings of fruit and veggies, will I have to become a vegetarian by default.  Or, what I’m really asking is if I’m going to have to give up my Cocoa Puffs and M&M’s?

I would have to say I’ve been shocked in general about how stuffed I am most of the day.  Man alive!  My friend the dietitian wasn’t kidding when she told me this was going to be a fiber-fest.  I won’t even go into what happens once the carrots and apples hit the stomach. Lets just say the ride out is “packed.”

Anyway, below is what I found in terms of low-calorie fruits.  I will talk about veggies tomorrow.   Keep in mind the goal of this little exercise:  to eat fewer calories in the healthy food categories, so I can have 5-6 M&M’s at the end of the day.

Low-Calorie Fruits—

  • Cherries:  3 fresh cherries have about 5 calories
  • Apricots: 1 medium apricot only has 17 calories
  • Grapefruit: ½ fresh grapefruit has 35 calories
  • Plums:  1 medium-sized plum only comes in at 35 calories
  • Strawberries:  ½ cup of fresh strawberries have about 23 calories
  • Watermelon:  ½ cup fresh watermelon equals a very filling 26 calories

The only thing this little exercise did was make me seriously yearn for summer.  But, luckily we don’t live too far away from California.  Our grocery store stocks some pretty fine cherries, strawberries and grapefruit right now.   On the flip side. . .M&M’s are always in season.   Hmmmmm. :)
